Wang Chong ist Chinas umtriebigster Theaterregisseur, ein globaler Nomade, der ein bewegendes Stück präsentiert, das gleichzeitig künstlerisches Manifest ist. Nachdem das Stück 2025 im Rahmen des Forums beim Berliner Theatertreffen zu sehen war, kommt es nun nach Köln ans FWT.
Wir können nicht wirklich sagen, worum es in dieser Arbeit geht. Wozu diese Geheimniskrämerei? Diese Frage können wir auch nicht wirklich beantworten. Was aber können wir sagen? Diese Performance ist ein überraschendes Solo über kreative Risikobereitschaft. Wang Chong findet sich selbst alleine auf einer Bühne wieder und präsentiert ein persönliches Manifest über das künstlerische Schaffen in der Heimat und im Ausland: eine Performance mit genauso vielen Fragen wie Antworten.
„Made in China 2.0“ ist nicht nur ein erhellendes Porträt von Familie und Popkultur, es ist auch eine bewegende Betrachtung der Rolle von Künstler*innen und Provokateur*innen in unsicheren Zeiten. Diese Arbeit feierte ihre Premiere 2023 in Boston und wurde seitdem mehr als 60 Mal auf sechs Kontinenten gezeigt.

Wang Chong gets probably more around than any other Chinese theatre director, being a global nomad who presents a moving play that is also an artistic manifesto. After being presented in 2025 as part of the framing program at the Berliner Theatertreffen, the piece now comes to the FWT: Cologne.
We can’t really tell you what this show is about. Why the mystery? Well, we can’t really tell you that either. So, what can we tell you? We can tell you that this performance is an intimate and unexpected solo about creative risk-taking. Wang Chong finds himself alone on stage presenting a personal manifesto about making art at home and abroad: a performance with as many questions as answers.
“Made in China 2.0” is not only an illuminating portrait of family and popular culture; it is also a moving examination of the role of the artist and provocateur in uncertain times. This work premiered in Boston in 2023 and has had more than 60 performances in countries on six continents.
Wang Chong ist der Gründer des Théâtre du Rêve Expérimental, einer in Peking ansässigen Performance-Gruppe. Er ist der chinesische Theaterregisseur mit den meisten internationalen Aufträgen: Seine Werke wurden in mehr als 20 Ländern aufgeführt und von Kritiker:innen in aller Welt gelobt. Wang Chongs Arbeiten denken klassische und zeitgenössische Literaturen radikal neu, experimentieren mit theatralen Formen und multimedialen Strategien und liefern so kritische, oft konfrontative Kommentare zur modernen chinesischen Geschichte. Zu Wang Chongs Werken gehören: „The Warfare of Landmine 2.0“, das 2013 mit dem Festival/Tokyo Award ausgezeichnet wurde; „Lu Xun“, das von der Beijing News als beste chinesische Aufführung des Jahres 2016 bezeichnet wurde; „Teahouse 2.0“, das mit dem One Drama Award The Best Little Theater Performance des Jahres 2017 ausgezeichnet wurde; und “Asiawochen”, Premiere in 2026 im Theater Heidelberg. A bitter career downfall – caused by a dangerous decision – brings long-buried family secrets to light. With sharp humour and unsparing directness, the performance reveals how easily an individual’s carefully balanced existence can be knocked off course — and pushed onto an unexpected path.
Using multi-perspective storytelling and references to today’s internet culture, Made in China 2.0 draws audiences into complex realities far beyond their own. What emerges is a gripping yet hopeful snapshot of lives in uncertain times — and a manifesto for creative risk-taking and an artist’s uncompromising drive. Since its premiere in Boston in 2023, the piece has toured more than 60 times across 12 countries and six continents.
Wang Chong is the founder of Théâtre du Rêve Expérimental, a Beijing-based performance group. He is the most internationally commissioned Chinese theatre director, with his works performed in over 20 countries, gaining critical acclaim across the globe. Wang Chong radically reimagines classical and contemporary literature, combining experimental modes of spectatorship with multimedia strategies to produce critical—often confrontational—commentaries on modern Chinese history.
His works include: The Warfare of Landmine 2.0, winning 2013 Festival/Tokyo Award; “Lu Xun”, noted by The Beijing News as The Best Chinese Performance of 2016; “Teahouse 2.0”, winning One Drama Award The Best Little Theater Performance of 2017; and “Asia Weeks”, premiered in 2026 at Theater Heidelberg. Since 2022, he has embraced a global nomad lifestyle.
